Bryson Cyrus opens a new creative chapter with the single "Know This"

Bryson Cyrus, a 31-year-old musician and songwriter, has undergone a significant evolution in his approach to creativity. After releasing the album Javelina in 2021, which reflected his diverse musical interests, he arrived at an important rethinking of his artistic mission. Instead of continuing to experiment with a multitude of sounds and styles, he decided to focus on a clearly defined sound and perfect it.

From Genre Diversity to Focus: A New Creative Philosophy

Sharing from his Nashville home, Bryson Cyrus explains that his previous works embodied everything he loved about music, but he realized the need for a shift. The main takeaway he formulated is simple but profound – instead of creating every sound he liked, it’s better to settle on one direction and develop it to its fullest.

This internal reassessment naturally led him to a new project. Seeking fresh ideas, he engaged not only in songwriting but also took on the role of a full producer for his own recordings for the first time. The first four months of work, building the album brick by brick, proved critical in shaping his new sound.

“Know This”: The Birth of a Track with Mutual Help

The fresh single “Know This,” on which Bryson Cyrus collaborates with Grammy-winning sister Miley Cyrus, embodies this new philosophy. Notably, this is the first musical collaboration between siblings.

The story of the song’s creation began when Bryson gathered with his co-writer Jordan Lindley, and they decided to create a track with maximum energy and a positive mood. The songwriting process took about an hour – a period the musician considers ideal for creativity, as it minimizes overthinking and allows focus on the song’s energy.

Once the right energy was captured, the authors returned and adapted the lyrics to match the created mood. The lyrics gained a dual meaning – the verses tell about Franklin, a city near Nashville where his family grew up, while the chorus reflects the experience of living in Los Angeles, where the family moved when Bryson was about to start high school. The lyrics thus embody overcoming distance and embracing life changes.

When the final version was ready, Bryson Cyrus felt that the track lacked a certain power. Discussing with his sound engineer, they mutually agreed on one idea – to invite his sister. Although Miley was the most obvious choice in retrospect, at the moment of reflection, the decision didn’t come immediately. However, once the idea arose, it became clear that no one else could give the track the required vocal power.

Miley Cyrus’s response was quick and generous. Instead of one file, which Bryson expected to receive, his sister sent fifteen variations of overlays and harmonies, allowing him to choose the perfect sound. He decided to minimize the use of reverb effects to highlight the raw strength and purity of her vocals.

A Clearly Defined Direction: Folk-Pop Sound

Bryson Cyrus describes the sound of the new album as folk-pop music – full music performed on acoustic guitar. The main focus during this project shifted to lyrics, melodies, and the fundamental elements of the song, around which everything else is built.

This differs from his previous approach, when he did not produce his own recordings and therefore did not have full control over the process. This time, every decision was intentional – if an element sounded good but did not fit the overall concept, it was removed to avoid distracting from other aspects of the composition.

Since the release of Javelina, his main goal has been to create music that brings joy to people. Bryson Cyrus sees his songs as companions for various moments in life – car rides, bike trips, or hikes. The music he now creates is meant to enhance the everyday life of listeners.

Future Collaborations and Plans

Regarding potential collaborations, Bryson Cyrus has already confirmed the participation of several artists in upcoming projects, including Tyler Ramsey from Band of Horses, his co-writer Jordan Lindley, and the group Old Sea Brigade. He also hinted at the possibility of future joint work with other family members.

Among his ideal collaborations, the musician highlights artists who have always inspired his creativity, specifically mentioning Regina Spektor and Imogen Heap. He calls a possible collaboration with the latter his dream.

When asked about tours and performances, Bryson Cyrus indicates that the project is in the planning stage. He aims for any live performances – whether at festivals or full tours – to present his work in the most attractive and fun light. The musician is confident that his fans will soon be able to hear these songs live.

The single “Know This,” performed by Bryson Cyrus and featuring Miley Cyrus, is already available on all major streaming platforms, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in the artist’s new sound.
