Anthropic Says Pentagon ‘Supply Chain Risk’ Label Isn’t as Bad as Feared
AI firm Anthropic said that the recent Pentagon designation labeling the company a “supply chain risk” will not disrupt most of its business relationships. For context, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had previously stated that companies working with the U.S. military would not be allowed to conduct commercial activity with Anthropic after contract negotiations broke down. However, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei clarified that the Pentagon’s letter only restricts the use of Anthropic’s AI model Claude within Department of Defense contracts.

As a result, it does not ban all partnerships with companies that also work with the military. It’s worth noting that the issue is due to disagreements over how the military can use Claude. The Pentagon wanted the technology to be used for all lawful military purposes, but Anthropic refused to remove certain restrictions. Specifically, the company has drawn two clear lines: it does not want its AI used in autonomous weapons or in mass surveillance of U.S. citizens.
When negotiations stalled, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s products within six months, and the Pentagon later applied the supply chain risk label. Nevertheless, Anthropic argues that the designation does not legally block most commercial uses of Claude. In addition, Amodei said that Anthropic believes the government’s action may not be legally valid and plans to challenge it in court.
Claude Investors Have Seen Huge Gains
Anthropic investors have seen huge gains during the past few months as the company’s valuation has increased from $183 billion to $380 billion. Meanwhile, the company has raised billions of dollars to continue funding its impressive growth.
