The International Energy Agency’s report released on the 6th predicts that from now until 2030, global electricity demand will grow at an average annual rate of over 3.5%. By 2030, the combined share of renewable energy and nuclear power in the global electricity mix will rise to 50%. The annual report on the global power system and markets, “Electricity 2026,” states that from now until 2030, the growth rate of electricity demand is expected to be at least 2.5 times the overall energy demand growth. Driving factors include increased industrial electricity use, the continued popularity of electric vehicles, increased air conditioning demand, and rising electricity consumption in data centers and artificial intelligence. Emerging and developing economies remain the main engines of electricity demand growth, while electricity consumption in developed economies, after 15 years of stagnation, is also beginning to rise. The report says that driven by record-breaking deployment of solar power facilities, global renewable energy generation is surpassing coal-fired power generation, with the latest data showing that the two will be nearly equal by 2025. Nuclear power generation is also reaching new records. It is expected that by 2030, renewable energy and nuclear power combined will supply 50% of the world’s electricity, up from the current 42%.
