Lee Jae-myung posts a message of condolence
Global Times, citing a report by the Yonhap News Agency, said that on the 29th, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung issued a statement expressing deep condolences over the death of a victim of Japan’s wartime “comfort women” system the previous day.

In a post on the afternoon of the 29th, Lee Jae-myung wrote, “Another victim of Japan’s ‘comfort women’ system has left us. With a heart filled with grief, may the deceased rest in peace,” and added, “She reminds all of us that we must never forget history, and leaves us with a task: to ensure that the next generation lives in a more just and peaceful world.”
Lee Jae-myung also said that the South Korean government will do its utmost to restore the honor and dignity of victims of Japan’s “comfort women” system. The post concluded with the words, “Once again, I express my deep condolences.”
Previously, according to a notification from South Korea’s Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (formerly the Ministry of Women and Families), a victim of Japan’s “comfort women” system died on the 28th. As of then, among the surviving victims of Japan’s “comfort women” system who are registered with the South Korean government, only 5 remain alive.
Yonhap News Agency noted that, according to statistics, as of March of this year, there were 240 victims of Japan’s “comfort women” system registered with the South Korean government. Of these, 235 have already passed away and only 5 are still alive. The average age of the surviving victims currently living is 95.8, and the oldest was born in 1928, now 97 years old.
