Meta Platforms is funding the construction of seven new natural gas power plants, to supply power to its largest data centers’ electricity needs.

Against the backdrop of accelerating AI competitions, the company’s reliance on fossil fuels has increased further.

In a statement released last Friday, a local subsidiary of U.S. power company Entergy said that Meta has reached a new agreement with it, under which Meta will pay to build enough natural gas power plants to provide a total of 5.2 gigawatts of electricity for data centers it is developing in rural areas of Louisiana.
