WBC 2026 Cinderella? MVP? CBS Sports Reporter Predictions

According to analysis by CBS Sports and Mike Axisa of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, several unexpected developments are anticipated in WBC 2026.

He predicts that Italy will perform a “Cinderella story,” advancing past strong opponents like the USA and Mexico in Group B to reach the quarterfinals, despite being in the same group as powerhouses. Meanwhile, the previous third-place team Mexico might be eliminated.

Italy’s pitching staff includes Philadelphia Phillies’ ace Aaron Nola, who was an All-Star in 2018.

Additionally, he expects South Korea to overcome a streak of three consecutive first-round exits, relying on players like Jung Hoo Lee and Do Yeong Kim to advance from the group stage.

In terms of player performance, Axisa is optimistic that Japanese pitcher Hiromi Itoh will shine in this tournament and become a globally recognized star. The US team, with its star-studded lineup, is expected to break the record for most home runs by a team in a single tournament.

However, regarding the ultimate champion prediction, he believes the Dominican Republic will emerge victorious in the final and that Fernando Tatis Jr. will be named the tournament MVP, contrary to MLB experts’ rankings.

WBC 2026 Rules

This year’s Classic features 20 teams divided into four groups in a round-robin preliminary stage, with the top two from each group advancing to the knockout stage. The knockout rounds are single-elimination until the champion is crowned.

Team roster rules require each team to include 1 head coach, 8 assistant coaches, and 30 players, with at least 14 pitchers and 2 catchers.

Player eligibility is flexible: as long as a player is listed on the national team roster, or born to a parent from that country, or holds citizenship or permanent residency, they are eligible to compete.

The tournament continues the designated pitcher system, with each team allowed up to 10 designated pitchers. After each round, teams can replace pitchers from their list, but once removed, they cannot re-register. Injured or absent players due to leave of absence (e.g., bereavement, paternity leave) can be temporarily replaced for 1 to 7 days, but the replacement players cannot rejoin the team during that period.

Equipment used in the tournament is identical to MLB standards, including official game balls and specialized pitcher’s powder. Replay review rules follow MLB standards: in the semifinals and finals, each team has 2 challenges per game; in other rounds, 1 challenge per team.

In case of tied records in the preliminary stage, rankings are determined by head-to-head results, runs allowed, earned runs allowed, and batting average in that order.
