Grab Announces $600 Million Cash Acquisition of foodpanda Taiwan Business

Today, Southeast Asia’s leading ride-hailing platform Grab announced that it has reached an agreement with Delivery Hero to acquire foodpanda Taiwan’s delivery business for $600 million in cash. The deal is structured as a cash-free, debt-free transaction and is pending regulatory approval, with completion expected in the second half of 2026.

This move not only expands Grab’s business footprint into its ninth market but also marks its first entry outside Southeast Asia into a non-core region. Grab CEO and co-founder Anthony Tan said that Taiwan’s highly urbanized, mobile-first consumer habits are very similar to those in Southeast Asia.

foodpanda Taiwan’s Gross Merchandise Value to Reach $1.8 Billion by 2025

Currently, foodpanda Taiwan’s operations have reached a mature scale. By 2025, the gross merchandise volume (GMV) is expected to be approximately $1.8 billion, achieving EBITDA profitability before group cost allocations. Delivery Hero CEO Niklas Östberg stated that this sale is part of the company’s strategic realignment and reflects the actual value of foodpanda Taiwan’s business.

After the transaction, Grab’s services will cover 21 cities in Taiwan, with plans to implement its AI technology and operational systems, including its self-developed mapping service GrabMaps, AI merchant assistants, and real-time data analytics tools to improve delivery efficiency and merchant operations. Additionally, Grab will enhance user dining experiences through personalized recommendation systems.

Grab stated that the company generates approximately $18.8 billion in economic value annually in Southeast Asia and hopes to replicate a similar model in Taiwan to provide more income opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises and delivery partners, further promoting local digital economy and restaurant industry growth. During the transition period, Delivery Hero will continue to operate foodpanda Taiwan and provide post-sale support services. Grab plans to complete platform integration by the first half of 2027, transferring users, merchants, and delivery partners entirely to the Grab app.

From a financial perspective, this acquisition is expected to positively contribute to Grab’s 2026 revenue (estimated between $4.04 billion and $4.1 billion) and potentially add at least $60 million in adjusted EBITDA by 2028, further supporting its goal of reaching $1.5 billion in EBITDA within three years.
