U.S. WOMAN FALLS VICTIM TO A CRYPTO “PIG-BUTCHERING” ROMANCE SCAM, LOSING NEARLY $1 MILLION

A woman in San Jose, California, realized she had fallen for a crypto “pig-butchering” scam only after consulting #ChatGPT, by which time she had already lost close to $1 million.

She met a man calling himself “Ed” on Facebook, who claimed to be a wealthy businessman and gradually built an emotional connection with her. He then persuaded her to invest in crypto, leading her to transfer a total of $800,000 from her retirement savings and through a second mortgage on her home.

When her supposed investment account was suddenly “frozen” and “Ed” demanded an additional $1 million to unlock the funds, ChatGPT told her that the situation matched a well-known scam pattern and advised her to contact the police. Investigators later found that the money had been sent to a Malaysian bank account and withdrawn by the scammers.
