Overview

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has been authorized to offer a blockchain-based securities service.

According to a press release, Depository Trust Company (DTC), DTCC’s subsidiary, obtained an SEC No-Action Letter enabling it to tokenize traditional, custodied assets.

Service Details

The service, set to roll out in 2026, will operate on approved blockchains for three years and provide digital representations with the same legal rights, safeguards, and entitlements as their traditional counterparts.

Assets covered include the Russell 1000, major index ETFs, and US Treasury bills, notes, and bonds.

Key Benefits

DTCC said the authorization will support the long-term shift toward digital markets. The service will play a key role in advancing a secure digital asset ecosystem and enabling innovations such as:

  • 24/7 trading
  • Improved collateral flow
  • Programmable financial instruments

Future Outlook

The tokenization framework is intended to connect TradFi and DeFi liquidity in a resilient and cost-efficient manner. DTCC, which has long studied distributed ledger technology’s market applications, plans to outline wallet registration and L1/L2 approval processes in upcoming updates.

According to studies, the move by DTCC is technically interesting— but don’t be fooled by the headline; regulatory approval does not necessarily mean it can actually get off the ground. It’s worth noting that when traditional financial institutions enter the scene, it usually involves a lot of compliance work, and the real throughput bottleneck has not yet been solved.

Hmm... DTCC's move is quite interesting, but let's wait until it actually materializes before commenting.

DTCC's move, is traditional finance finally waking up? But I'm still waiting to see their true implementation; we've seen too many theoretical proposals on paper.

Is DTCC really going on-chain? This will blur the lines between traditional finance and the crypto world... But on the other hand, will the actual implementation turn out to be just another "wolf coming"?

DTCC is really getting serious this time. When it comes to bringing traditional finance onto the blockchain, they are still the ones to break the ice.
