The NIGHT token is the native governance and utility token of the Midnight network, a blockchain project focused on data privacy protection, developed by the Input Output Global (IOG) team led by Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson. The NIGHT token is a transferable governance token with a fixed total supply of 24 billion tokens, all minted at launch. It is not used directly for transaction fees but is held to generate DUST—a non-transferable, decaying privacy resource used for transactions and smart contract execution on the network. This design cleverly separates the speculative value of the token from network operational costs, preventing users from constantly consuming core tokens during transactions while providing sustainable privacy protection. Holders of NIGHT can participate in network governance, stake to support the consensus mechanism, and generate DUST for low-cost or even “free” transactions.

The project’s history traces back to the expanding needs of the Cardano ecosystem. As blockchain applications grow more widespread, data privacy becomes a key pain point. Traditional public chains like Ethereum or Cardano are efficient but have fully transparent transaction data, which can expose user privacy; privacy coins often face regulatory pressure due to their strong anonymity. Midnight aims to fill this gap: providing “rational privacy,” allowing developers to selectively disclose data, supporting the development of business-sensitive and personal financial dApps. For example, enterprises can build privacy-preserving DeFi protocols without sacrificing auditability.
The distribution of the NIGHT token reflects a community-oriented approach. Unlike many projects relying on VCs or private sales, Midnight distributed about 69% of tokens (16.6 billion) via the “Glacier Drop” airdrop, directly to multi-chain users, including holders of Cardano (ADA), Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and other top ecosystems. This airdrop is regarded as one of the largest community distributions in blockchain history, covering tens of millions of wallets, aiming to build a broad, active user base from the outset. The remaining tokens are allocated for network reserves, block rewards, and ecosystem incentives to ensure a long-term deflationary mechanism.

In December 2025, the NIGHT token was officially launched and listed on multiple exchanges. During the initial launch, the token experienced dramatic price fluctuations: opening around $0.11, but due to immediate unlocking of 25% for airdrop participants and subsequent selling, it quickly dropped to about $0.02. Later, with liquidity stabilization and market absorption, the price rebounded to the $0.04–$0.06 range, with a market cap exceeding $800 million at one point, ranking within the top 200. The volatility mainly stems from high initial circulation (166 billion tokens) and phased unlocking: the remaining 75% is released in three stages over nine months. While this causes short-term selling pressure, it also reflects fair distribution and prevents early investors from monopolizing access.

Technically, Midnight adopts a TypeScript-based smart contract framework, lowering development barriers while integrating advanced ZK proof techniques (such as Pluto-Eris curves) for efficient, composable privacy execution. The network plans to support cross-chain interoperability via bridges with Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, and others, expanding use cases. Once the mainnet fully launches, it is expected to attract privacy-focused DeFi, compliant NFTs, and enterprise data-sharing applications.

As a nascent project, NIGHT faces challenges: complex privacy technology that may impact performance; uncertain regulatory environments; competitors such as Zcash or emerging ZK chains. Its advantages include Cardano ecosystem backing, fair launch, and a unique token model. If the ecosystem develops rapidly, NIGHT could become a flagship asset in the privacy blockchain space. Investors should be aware of its high volatility and monitor network progress, dApp adoption, and unlocking events.
