Many people confuse Web3 and blockchain, thinking they are the same thing. But in fact, although these two concepts are related, they are completely different.

Blockchain is a foundational technology, an implementation of a distributed ledger. Web3 is a broader ecosystem vision that depicts the next generation of the internet—where users own their data, control their identities, and manage their assets.

In other words, blockchain may be a tool for building Web3, but Web3's realization does not necessarily depend on blockchain. Blockchain has many application scenarios that are completely unrelated to Web3, such as supply chain traceability, medical records, and more.

So next time someone asks you, "Is blockchain Web3?", you should be clear—in these two concepts, the dimensions are fundamentally different. Clarifying this point is the only way to truly understand what is being discussed in this field.

Finally, someone has explained this thoroughly. I’ve been tired of listening to those amateurs spout nonsense. Always mixing up blockchain and Web3 as the same thing—truly, their brains haven't turned the corner. Those who understand will get it; those who don’t need to wake up. This explanation is excellent—simple, straightforward, and hitting the core. Here we go again, having to educate people about this. Exhausting. Only with a clear framework can you truly participate in this game; otherwise, you're just a leek. No doubt about it, but there are still too few people who truly understand.

It's actually similar to the relationship between oracle bones and bronze ware—one is a recording method, and the other is the entire civilization's imagination. Confusing them is quite unfortunate.

That's a valid point, but what I care more about is—how many projects claiming to be Web3 are actually just blockchain Ponzi schemes in disguise? On-chain data easily reveals the truth.

Finally someone has clarified it. There are a bunch of people around me who really can't tell the difference between these two things. Blockchain is not the same as Web3. How many times do I have to say this? Anyway, what's the use of clarifying this? Most projects are still just using Web3 as a gimmick to scam investors. It's really just a difference between tools and vision. To put it simply, that's it. So Web3 doesn't necessarily have to use blockchain. If that's the case, then my previous understanding was really a waste of effort. This explanation is a hundred times clearer than those Little Red Book posts I've seen. Sounds good, but I don't know when true Web3 will actually be realized. Understanding this point is indeed important to avoid being fooled.

Finally, someone has clarified it. Too many people are confusing these two concepts. Web3 is actually just a vision; blockchain is the real technology. They are two different things. Now I can use this article to counter those who are talking nonsense. Blockchain isn't just about encryption; supply chain traceability and other applications don't really require the Web3 concept. From now on, if I hear someone mixing these two up, I'll just send the link directly.
