U.S. Senator Lummis Slams Department of Justice: Ignoring Presidential Orders to Sell Bitcoin Is a "Waste" of National Strategic Reserves

On January 6th, U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis posted on the X platform, sharply criticizing the government over the Department of Justice's sale of confiscated Bitcoin.

Lummis straightforwardly stated that the presidential executive order explicitly requires such assets to be included in the "Strategic Bitcoin Reserve," yet the Department of Justice is still publicly liquidating them, which is completely contrary to her advocated "hold rather than sell" national Bitcoin strategy, leaving her "deeply concerned."

These remarks are a direct response to the revelations by Frank Corva. The disclosure claimed that the Department of Justice had sold a batch of Bitcoin, assets confiscated from the co-founder of the crypto mixer Samourai Wallet, and directly related to his plea agreement.

She also warned that, amid other countries actively stockpiling Bitcoin, the U.S. should not continue selling and wasting these strategic assets' reserves.

Notably, Lummis previously proposed a bill suggesting that the U.S. Treasury purchase 1 million Bitcoin within five years to offset the impact of dollar devaluation.

She also stated that this bill would require the U.S. Treasury to store the Bitcoin itself, with the government holding these tokens for at least 20 years, and only allowing sales in "special cases such as reducing national debt."

In summary, Lummis's questioning of the Department of Justice's Bitcoin sales, along with her proposed bill to purchase Bitcoin, reflects her emphasis on Bitcoin as a strategic asset and her efforts to push the U.S. government toward a more proactive Bitcoin policy.
