zkSync once provided deployment incentives to Treasure DAO and AAVE Grants, with individual active users receiving $200 subsidies. However, these protocols and users migrated to Base in succession within less than half a year. Although incentive policies were in place, user flow was not locked in as expected—they ultimately followed the stronger ecosystem.

What deserves more attention is the ecosystem-level burning money competition. zkSync reportedly invested $100-300 million in funds to subsidize Base ecosystem development, a massive expenditure that reflects the intense competitive landscape in the Layer 2 track. Meanwhile, the ZK token declined 55% from its November high, with the market questioning the effectiveness of the project's incentive strategy and long-term prospects. Incentives ≠ retention; this case once again validates the complex relationship between capital investment and user stickiness in the Web3 ecosystem.

Money can't buy loyalty, this is the clear explanation People follow the trend just because, giving money is useless, even after pouring hundreds of millions of dollars, users still run away, I'm convinced Incentives are just an illusion; in the end, it still depends on the robustness of the ecosystem itself

Spending $200 can't buy user loyalty, this is the truth of Web3 zkSync's move is outrageous, pouring money into Base, and as a result, their token has dropped 55%. Isn't that losing both the wife and the army? Incentives are just a false front; ecosystem strength is the real key. This game was lost long ago. Users will always move to where they can make more money, no one can be blamed. I just want to know how much the users who received that $200 subsidy are now earning on Base. In the red ocean of Layer 2, everyone is burning money to fight for the ecosystem, and in the end, some die and some escape. ZK tokens have fallen so much from their peak, showing that the market has already seen through this incentive trick.

Spending money and users still leave, this is awkward... It seems that Base is indeed more attractive.

It took me a while to realize that zkSync is actually subsidizing Base with their own money? That's a brilliant move.

Money can't buy loyalty—that's the magical realism of Web3.
