U.S. Prosecutors Seek to Forfeit $3.44 Million USDT in Online Investment Fraud and Money Laundering
Mars Finance reports that according to market sources, the Office of the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts announced that it has filed a civil forfeiture lawsuit seeking to recover approximately 3.444 million USDT. These assets are alleged to be proceeds from online investment fraud and money laundering schemes. The investigation began in late 2024 and involved at least four victims, including two residents of Massachusetts, one from Utah, and one from South Carolina. Court documents allege that unknown entities used misleading messages or encrypted communication apps like WhatsApp and Telegram to build trust with victims, then lured them into investing in an exclusive Ethereum investment opportunity backed by physical gold. Victims were instructed to purchase ETH and transfer it to an intermediary wallet controlled by unknown parties, after which the funds were exchanged for USDT and transferred to non-custodial wallets for theft. The government seized the 3.444 million USDT involved in February and March 2025. The civil forfeiture lawsuit allows third parties to claim the assets, which must be resolved before the assets can be forfeited and returned to the victims.
