The Democratic Challenge to Conservative Unity: What Lies Behind New Support Data in Florida's Election Race
Recent public opinion polls paint an interesting picture of the ongoing Florida primary battles. Republican voters in the state demonstrate a paradoxical attitude toward political authorities: while supporting the candidate endorsed by a well-known politician, they trust the judgment of another influential figure more.
Donald’s support grows after Trump endorsement
A survey conducted by the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Laboratory among 657 likely Republican voters (margin of error ±4.38%) revealed a striking endorsement effect. When respondents were informed of Byron Donalds’ support from Donald Trump, his support rose to 47%, significantly surpassing Casey DeSantis’ 12%. Third is James Fishback with 5%, followed by Lieutenant Governor Jey Collins at 2% and former Speaker Paul Renner at 1%.
However, the same respondent demographic showed a completely different picture before learning about Trump’s support. Without mentioning external backing, Donalds leads Casey DeSantis by a minimal four-point margin (28% vs. 24%), highlighting how critical influential endorsements are in modern elections.
Choosing between authorities: who matters more to voters
Another notable aspect of the study is the contrast in results when Republican voters were asked whose support mattered more in their candidate choice. The results were the opposite of the previous question. 42% chose Governor Ron DeSantis’ opinion, while 32% cited Trump. This suggests that Casey DeSantis could potentially rely on her spouse’s influence, even if he has not officially endorsed any candidate for his successor’s position.
Dr. Sean Frider, the research director and political science professor, offered an intriguing explanation for this paradox. He said that DeSantis’ dominance in the importance of support is less about voters’ preference for his political stance and more about curiosity and the desire to hear his official position. Trump’s stance is already well known to the public, while DeSantis remains silent, creating an informational vacuum. “This explains Donald’s clear lead over Casey DeSantis after Trump’s endorsement, since spousal approval is certainly implied if she decides to run,” the expert clarified.
Historical context: from endorsement to political power
History shows the powerful influence of personal support in Florida politics. A year ago, Trump’s endorsement virtually sealed the contest in Donalds’ favor. Eight years earlier, Trump’s backing helped an otherwise little-known congressman from northeastern Florida, Ron DeSantis, defeat Adam Putnam in the Republican primary. Subsequently, DeSantis narrowly defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum in the general election to become governor of the state.
The survey was conducted from February 16 to 20 of this year among a representative sample of the Republican electorate. The results demonstrate the complex dynamics of political authority influence on voter behavior and suggest that Casey DeSantis’ entry into the race could completely reshape the primary strategies of all gubernatorial candidates.
