South Korea's Economic Trajectory Depends on Demographic Trends and Consumer Confidence Indicators
Recently, various indicators that measure consumer sentiment and Korea’s population trends are about to be released. These indicators are expected to play an important role in understanding Korea’s economic situation and future population composition.
The National Statistical Office will release the “January Population Movement” report on the 25th of this month. Attention will be focused on whether the trend of increasing newborns, validated last year, will continue. As of December last year, the number of newborns has increased for 18 consecutive months, but whether this trend will persist into early 2026 remains uncertain. The positive perception of population growth and fertility, combined with related government policies, leads most to believe that the number of newborns will continue to rise in the short term.
The strengthening of consumer protection within the financial regulatory system has also become a focus of discussion. The Financial Supervisory Service chief plans to hold a roundtable with major consumer and citizen groups on the 24th to directly hear related issues and establish a regulatory direction centered on consumer protection. Such discussions aim to create a safer environment for consumers in the financial market.
Additionally, the February consumer sentiment survey released by the Bank of Korea is noteworthy. The housing price expectation index plummeted 16 points compared to last month, indicating instability in the domestic housing market. This is believed to be the result of recent real estate policies combined with external economic factors such as rising international oil prices.
The future pattern of Korea’s consumer confidence and population trends remains uncertain, but positive developments such as population growth and strengthened consumer protection are likely to contribute to economic stability. Economic experts emphasize the need to closely monitor these indicators’ medium- and long-term impacts on Korea’s economy and to take appropriate measures.
