Recently, a case that many had forgotten resurfaced on social media: the death of El Pirata de Culiacán. And it’s no coincidence that it’s trending again right now, after all the buzz generated by the confirmation of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes’s death a few days ago. The influencer’s name is forever linked to that story of violence, but there are details that remain disturbing.

Juan Luis Lagunas Rosales, known as El Pirata de Culiacán, was a YouTuber who exploded on social media before turning 18. He started from the bottom, washing cars, but moved to Culiacán at 15 and began uploading videos of parties, alcohol, and regional music that quickly went viral. He reached nearly 800,000 followers on Facebook and over 300,000 on Instagram. Artists like Noel Aragón and El Ninii dedicated corridos to him. He was a social media phenomenon, but that also exposed him.

In November 2017, El Pirata uploaded a video that changed everything. In the recording, he made a direct statement against the leader of CJNG: “Here, it’s about whatever, whatever they put in front of me, El Mencho doesn’t mean shit to me.” The video went viral instantly. Even the person recording reacted with a “it’s over,” as if they knew what was coming next.

A month later, on December 18, 2017, El Pirata de Culiacán was attacked at Menta2 Cantaros bar in Zapopan, Jalisco. He had posted live hours earlier that he would be there that night. When he arrived with a group of friends, about four armed men entered and headed straight for his table
