I just found out that in Edoméx, the validity of license plates is 5 years, while in Mexico City (CDMX), they only last 3. That’s a pretty big difference considering that here in the capital, you need to renew every 3 years. The vehicle registration in the State of Mexico is directly linked to those plates, so basically you don’t have to go through paperwork every year.

What’s interesting is that the state government activated a program some time ago for people with outstanding debts. If your plates were from 2021 and you had pending payments, you could get 100% forgiveness on past due vehicle tax and renewal fees. For those with plates from 2020 or older, they also offered full forgiveness for several previous years.

For those wanting to switch their plates to Edoméx from elsewhere, there were also subsidies on vehicle tax and tax waivers on used vehicles. In the end, having longer validity on plates means avoiding fines, surcharges, and those annoying verification procedures every now and then. Quite different from how things work here in CDMX, where everything is more constant.
