I just found out something interesting: in Mexico City, there is a legal way to have tinted windows without the risk of a fine. It’s not for everyone, but if you have a dermatological condition or photosensitivity, you can actually apply for an official permit.

The thing is, SEMOVI allows this, but you need a medical certificate from a public health institution. The process costs 417 pesos and is recorded on your vehicle registration. Without this, the fine can be up to 3,394 pesos, so the difference is significant.

The important thing to know is that there are transmissivity standards you must meet if you have the permitted permit. The windshield must allow at least 70% of light to pass through, and the front windows a minimum of 35%. If your car has factory-tinted windows, just present the invoice and that’s it, no problem.

Basically, if you need darker windows for medical reasons, the system is there. You just need to do the paperwork at SEMOVI offices. That way, you avoid issues during road checks where they measure with photometers. Did anyone else know that permitted tinting in Mexico City is allowed under these conditions?
