Many people think that their money in a Telegram wallet is protected just because it's a popular messenger. In reality, this is a big misconception. I recently learned of a case where Russian opposition activists lost access to all their funds. Just like that, without warning or explanation. Their crypto assets were frozen because they were placed on the government’s black list. No appeals, no options to recover the money. The company managing the Telegram wallet said they simply followed AML and KYC policies. It sounds reasonable on paper, but in practice, it means one thing: if authorities want to block your account, they will do it. And the wallet will comply with their demands.
This is the core of the problem. People believe that a Telegram wallet is a safe alternative to traditional banks. But that’s not entirely true. The difference between them isn’t as big as it seems. In both cases, you don’t control your funds. The company does. If it decides to freeze your account, your money will just disappear. No one will ask you, no courts will help.
Technically, the wallet is managed by The Open Platform, not Telegram itself. That’s an important point. The wallet is custodial, meaning the company holds your private keys and essentially your crypto assets. This is not the same as a decentralized wallet, where only you control your keys and no one can interfere. When someone else holds your keys, you are completely dependent on that company’s decisions. And if they froze funds once, they can do it again with someone else.
If you truly value financial freedom, you should reconsider where you store your crypto assets. There are alternatives. Tonkeeper, Trust Wallet, MetaMask are examples of decentralized wallets where you control your private keys. In these, your funds cannot be frozen by any company or government. Only you decide what to do with your money. That’s what real financial freedom means. Not “your keys, not your coins,” as they say in the crypto community. It’s not just a slogan; it’s a reality everyone working with crypto assets needs to understand.
