Recently, the Shiba Inu ecosystem faced a significant test. In an attempted attack on the Shibarium bridge, hackers attempted to steal over $1 million worth of BONE tokens. Following the incident, the project developers quickly responded by checking and addressing the situation of approximately 4.6 million BONE trying to be transferred.

The entire event coincided with an important upgrade of ShibaSwap. Developer Kaal Dhairya stated on September 13 that the attack was not a vulnerability of the protocol itself, but that the attacker controlled the validator keys, allowing them to approve a forged network state. This operation indicates that the attacker had planned preparations through flash loans and was well-versed in the design of the bridge.

Some independent investigators from the community also participated in the investigation of the incident. According to K9 FinanceDAO contributor Buzz, the attacker used a flash loan on ShibaSwap to purchase millions of BONE, temporarily gaining influence over the validators. They then successfully initiated malicious transactions and immediately repaid the loan with funds stolen from the bridge.

Blockchain records show that a total of 224.57 ETH and 9.26 billion SHIB Tokens were transferred. At the same time, 216 ETH was used to repay loans, while the remaining BONE was frozen by the developers due to unlocking delays and could not be withdrawn in time.

The attacker also attempted to sell approximately $700,000 worth of KNINE Tokens, but the sale attempt was blocked due to K9 DAO's multi-signature decision to blacklist the involved attack wallet.

The Shiba Inu developers have suspended staking operations to limit the impact of the attack and have transferred the staking management funds to a hardware wallet protected by a six-of-nine multisig. Dharia stated that these measures are temporary until new key secure distribution is established and the full extent of the event's impact is confirmed.

A significant upgrade to ShibaSwap coincides with the event. This update allows the platform to expand beyond Ethereum, now supporting direct token swaps on networks such as Polygon, Arbitrum, and Base without the need for bridging. Lucie, the head of the Shiba Inu ecosystem, stated that this upgrade aims to make ShibaSwap a multi-chain platform to attract liquidity and prepare for deeper integration with Shibarium.

Lucie stated: "This upgrade paves the way to attract liquidity from major blockchains, while also laying the foundation for the integration of Shibarium, strengthening the Shib ecosystem and connecting community culture with financial infrastructure."
