A hacker in the UK has been ordered to repay over £4 million in Bitcoin after hacking into a celebrity's account.

PANews reported on November 17 that, according to Sky News in the UK, the British prosecution revealed that a 26-year-old British man, Joseph James OConnor, hacked into multiple celebrities' X accounts to steal Bitcoin and has been ordered to return approximately £4.1 million in crypto assets. In 2023, he was sentenced to five years in the US for computer intrusion, wire fraud, and extortion. OConnor was arrested in Spain in 2021 and later extradited to the US after the Spanish High Court ruled that, due to the evidence and victims being in the US, it was the most appropriate jurisdiction for prosecution. In July 2020, the social platform X suffered a massive hacking attack, resulting in the accounts of celebrities such as Obama, Biden, and Bezos being compromised. O'Connor, in collaboration with others, exploited these hacked accounts to set up a scam, luring users to send Bitcoin worth $1,000 with the promise of doubling the return, thus stealing over $794,000 worth of Crypto Assets, and also threatening the celebrities. This Monday, the UK's Crown Prosecution Service announced that it obtained a civil recovery order to seize 42 Bitcoins and other assets. This valuation was determined after the freezing of their assets, and the prosecution ensured the freeze during extradition.
