Honestly, many so-called Web3 projects are currently just self-indulgent. Posting a few dozen bytes of transaction hashes on the chain and claiming to be "decentralized"? Wake up. Your images, videos, and front-end code are still running on centralized servers like AWS and Google Cloud. Your Web3 is essentially just a veneer over Web2. Once regulators or big corporations cut off the internet connection, those NFTs become dead links pointing to 404.
This is the real problem—true Web3 has never been just about modifying the blockchain layer, but requires a complete ecosystem. The emergence of decentralized storage protocols is like performing a thorough "surgery" on Web3. Using erasure coding technology to achieve millisecond response times transforms storage from a "once stored and dead" cold backup into a "living blood vessel" capable of rapid circulation.
And why didn't Filecoin save Web3? Its retrieval efficiency is too poor, completely outdated thinking from the last century. What can truly change the game are systems capable of handling low latency, high reliability storage bandwidth. Until the decentralized storage of large-scale data is properly solved, Web3 will never surpass the small circle of crypto enthusiasts in a self-congratulatory game, and it simply can't support social applications with millions of users.
