People’s Financial News, March 6 — On March 6, at the press conference on the economy during the Fourth Session of the 14th National People’s Congress, Zheng Shanjie, Director of the National Development and Reform Commission, discussed social security. He stated that the focus will be on caring for two groups (“the elderly and young children”) and providing three key services (healthcare, education, and employment).

For the elderly with high demand for elderly care services, such as those who are advanced in age, disabled, or suffering from dementia, efforts will be made to meet their needs by offering more specialized and convenient elderly care services. To address the care needs of disabled and demented seniors, 2,000 public elderly care institutions will be renovated and upgraded, aiming to increase the proportion of nursing beds in elderly care facilities to over 73%. For home-based elderly care, efforts will be made to improve aging infrastructure in old residential communities, with the goal of increasing the coverage of community elderly care service agencies and facilities to over 70%. Installing elevators in old residential communities will be included in the “New and Old” renovation projects.

For infants and young children aged 0–3, each prefecture-level city will be supported to establish at least one comprehensive childcare service center, which will serve as a leader in services, personnel training, standard setting, and family guidance, establishing visible service benchmarks.
