Opening arguments have begun in the first Illinois trial against Abbott Laboratories concerning its specialized cow’s milk-based formula for premature babies. Four Illinois mothers allege the formula caused necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in their infants, claiming Abbott failed to warn about the risks. Abbott, however, contends the formula is not dangerous and that additional warnings would not have prevented the illnesses, arguing that the absence of human milk, rather than formula exposure, is linked to an increased risk of NEC.
