EU Boosts Security Monitoring Amid Middle East Tensions
(MENAFN) The European Commission announced Monday that it is increasing monitoring of energy markets and internal security in response to rising tensions in the Middle East, following US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
The Commission’s Security College held a meeting to assess the situation in Iran and the broader region, focusing on potential spillover effects for the EU. The Commission stated its priorities are to support member states and protect EU citizens from the consequences of ongoing events in Iran and the Middle East.
To assist with evacuation and repatriation efforts, the Commission is coordinating closely with EU delegations on the ground. Transport disruption risks, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, are being closely tracked. An Energy Task Force, in collaboration with member states and the International Energy Agency, will hold its first meeting this week to monitor price and supply developments.
Reports indicated that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned ships in the Strait of Hormuz that passage might be blocked.
Regarding internal security, the EU is maintaining heightened vigilance and cooperating with Europol and member states to address potential threats arising from the crisis. Migration preparedness is also being strengthened through trend monitoring and coordination with United Nations agencies and partner countries to manage possible migration pressures.
