Japan to Support Malaysia's Rare Earth Refining with ODA

The Japanese government will provide technical support for rare earth mining to Malaysia, planning to supply equipment and environmental technology cooperation through ODA projects, aimed at diversifying rare earth procurement channels. This is the first cooperation between the two countries in this field, with experts already dispatched to promote the project and plans to invite Malaysian technicians to Japan for training.

The Japanese government will begin providing technical support related to rare earth mining to Malaysia. The plan includes supplying geological exploration equipment through Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects and promoting environmentally conscious rare earth refining technology cooperation. This initiative aims to help Malaysia, which has abundant rare earth reserves, establish a production foundation and diversify its sources of rare earth procurement.

This is the first time Japan and Malaysia are collaborating on rare earth mining technology through ODA. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has dispatched experts in resource geology, environmental chemistry, and other fields to Malaysia in February to promote the project launch.

Currently, technical personnel from Japan and Malaysia are communicating and coordinating on project objectives. The Japanese side also plans to invite about 10 technical staff in mineral processing and related fields from Malaysia to Japan for training.
