Odaily Planet Daily reports that a man was arrested for trespassing into the enclosure of the popular dwarf hippopotamus Moo Deng at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. The zoo posted on Facebook on March 17 that social media images showed an intruder entering Moo Deng’s enclosure around 5 p.m. that day. The man was subsequently subdued by security personnel and handed over to the police. The zoo assured the public that Moo Deng and the other hippos were unharmed but may have been slightly startled by the close contact with the intruder. The veterinary team will closely monitor the animals’ behavior.

A live stream on YouTube from the enclosure shows that the man jumped into the enclosure at 5:17 p.m., approached the hippos while holding a tablet to record, and at one point reached out to touch a hippo but quickly withdrew. Over a minute later, with assistance from another person, he climbed back over the fence and left.

Moo Deng became an internet sensation after being born on July 10, 2024. Its name means “Bouncy Pig” in Thai. The zoo is located in Chonburi Province, Thailand, about a two-hour drive from Bangkok.
