Hang Seng Index Trend | Down 43 Points at Midday, Real Estate Stocks Rise Against the Market
Hong Kong stocks failed to break through the 26,000-point level yesterday after attempts to rise, and although Asia-Pacific markets generally performed well this morning, A-shares were relatively soft. The Hong Kong market lacked clear direction in the early session, with the Hang Seng Index fluctuating between gains and losses around the 25,800 level, with a half-day range of only 163 points.
The Hang Seng Index opened 54 points higher at 25,923. In the early trading, it rose as much as 86 points to a high of 25,955, but pressure to retreat after approaching the 26,000 level caused it to fall back, briefly dropping 76 points to a low of 25,791. The midday close was at 25,825, down 43 points or 0.17%.
The China Enterprises Index fell 54 points or 0.61%, to 8,772; the Tech Index dropped 41 points or 0.81%, to 5,066.
Half-day turnover was HKD 108.98 billion, with net outflows from Northbound trading of HKD 207 million.
Tech and internet stocks were generally soft. Tencent (00700), which announced earnings today, fell 0.9% to HKD 545; Alibaba (09988) declined 0.8% to HKD 133.5; Kuaishou (01024) dropped 1.8% to HKD 58.8; JD.com (09618) fell 0.1% to HKD 112; Meituan (03690) declined 0.1% to HKD 79.95.
HSBC (00005) rose 1.5% to HKD 126.7; China Mobile (00941) fell 0.6% to HKD 79.55; Hong Kong Exchanges (00388) declined 0.7% to HKD 401.4. Pop Mart (09992) gained 1.7% to HKD 219.
Focus Sectors
Automobile stocks: Under pressure. Li Auto (02015) fell 6.2% to HKD 66.9; Geely (00175) dropped 3.4% to HKD 18.2, the worst performer among the blue chips in the morning; BYD (01211) declined 2.5% to HKD 101.9.
Real estate stocks: Outperforming against the trend. Sun Hung Kai Properties (00016) rose 3.2% to HKD 137.7; Henderson Land (00012) increased 2.3% to HKD 32.58; Wharf REIC (01997) gained 1.5% to HKD 25.02.
Oil stocks: Under pressure. CNOOC (00883) fell 3.1% to HKD 27.9; PetroChina (00857) declined 2.5% to HKD 10.32; Sinopec (00386) dropped 0.8% to HKD 4.74.
Key Stocks
Several stocks showed volatile performance after earnings reports. ZTO Express (02057) reported a 3% profit increase last year, and after earnings release, its stock rose 7.4% in the half-day to HKD 196.4, the best performer among blue chips.
Tencent Music (01698) fell sharply after earnings, dropping 22.7% to HKD 44.2.
CIFI Holdings (00148) reduced its stake in CIFI Group (01888), cashing out HKD 2.7 billion. The stock of CIFI Group fell 4.2% to HKD 22.04.
