(MENAFN) Hundreds of American service members have been relocated from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, according to reports citing defense officials familiar with the matter.

The same reports indicated that US personnel were also withdrawn from Bahrain, home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters.

Despite these movements, American troops continue to operate from installations across Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates.

The repositioning is widely viewed as a precautionary step amid escalating friction surrounding the possibility of a US strike on Iran. Analysts suggest that any such action could prompt retaliatory measures from Tehran targeting American military sites throughout the region.

The US military’s Central Command, responsible for operations spanning Iran and neighboring areas, did not provide immediate comment when approached for clarification.

Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions have sharpened. In correspondence addressed Thursday to the UN secretary-general, Iran’s envoy warned that in the event of an attack on Iran, “all bases, facilities, and assets of the hostile force in the region would constitute legitimate targets,” and the “United States would bear full and direct responsibility for any unpredictable and uncontrolled consequences.”

Al Udeid remains the largest US military installation in the Middle East and hosts approximately 10,000 personnel.
