Just one day after announcing the public beta, Meituan’s AI browser Tabbit has become embroiled in controversy. On March 3, the original author of Read Frog, “Dreaming of Sleep,” posted that Tabbit used code from Read Frog, and according to Read Frog’s GPL license, any product using that code must be open source. In response, Tabbit stated that when the team developed the translation feature in December last year, they noticed Read Frog’s open source project, which at that time did not include any open source license declaration in its repository. On January 2, 2026, Read Frog’s original author added the GPLv3 license. Since the Tabbit browser team did not continue to merge subsequent code from the original project, they failed to notice this license change in time. Tabbit will remove this translation project from the new version and will fully open source this project. This response was not accepted by “Dreaming of Sleep.” Subsequently, the Tabbit team directly communicated with the user “Dreaming of Sleep” and reached an agreement. Tabbit stated that they have discussed the project’s licensing authorization with Read Frog’s author; after authorization, they will update the code and restore the feature. Meanwhile, Tabbit will comprehensively upgrade its internal code review and open source project usage processes to ensure that any open source projects used or modified are clearly marked with their licenses and related information in the Tabbit product.
