Iraq and Kurdistan have reached an agreement to resume oil shipments through this semi-autonomous region, now exporting oil from its Kirkuk oil field. As the second-largest oil producer in OPEC, Iraq is working to mitigate the impact of the Strait of Hormuz closure.

Northern Oil Company announced on Wednesday that it has resumed transporting and exporting Kirkuk crude oil to the Turkish port of Ceyhan, with an initial export capacity of 250,000 barrels per day. Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul Ghani stated that this does not include the 210,000 barrels per day transported through the Northern Pipeline from Kurdistan.

Crude oil from Kurdistan and the Kirkuk oil field is transported to the Mediterranean port of Ceyhan, keeping it away from the conflict zones in the Persian Gulf.

Iraq’s current daily production is about 1.3 million barrels, significantly below the 4.3 million barrels before the outbreak of conflict.
