What is Hopium? What every cryptocurrency investor needs to understand
What is hopium? This is a slang term widely used by the cryptocurrency community to describe a dangerous psychological state – when investors cling to unfounded expectations about an investment. The term combines the words “hope” and “opium,” implying that these fanciful expectations are like an “addictive substance” that causes people to lose their ability to perceive the truth.
Origin and Official Meaning of Hopium
Hopium originated from online communities and quickly became a popular term in the cryptocurrency space. It is used to mock or ridicule individuals who are deluded by denial. In slang terms, “hopium” can be imagined as a type of “fictional drug” for those who need hope in difficult times. Its meaning often carries a mocking tone rather than positive optimism.
Hopium in the Context of Cryptocurrency and Investment
In the cryptocurrency market, hopium describes an investor who holds baseless hopes about their investment. A typical example: someone believes that a coin that has experienced a major crash still has the potential to “go to the moon” (increase in price beyond expectations). This mentality reflects the investor’s blindness – they refuse to acknowledge negative signs and instead self-convince themselves of unrealistic possibilities. Hopium is the enemy of sound investment decisions because it causes people to overlook real data.
Distinguishing Hopium from Copium
Hopium is often confused with “copium” – another slang term in the cryptocurrency community. However, these two words have different meanings. Copium relates to the psychological mechanisms investors use to “cope” or accept a negative situation that has occurred. Meanwhile, hopium refers to baseless hopes directed toward the future. Copium is a response to failure, while hopium is blind faith in success.
Real-Life Examples of Hopium
Hopium appears in many market situations. An investor buys BTC at a high price, and when the market drops, they do not sell their asset but instead repeatedly say “BTC will hit 100k USD” without any supporting evidence. Statements like “Buy a little hopium for the pessimists” or “This is hope for all of us” are often used to mock those holding assets that are “underwater” but still unwarrantedly optimistic.
Understanding what hopium is will help cryptocurrency investors recognize when they are deceiving themselves and need to return to decisions based on real data, not illusory expectations.
