Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the United States has been attempting to control the “Nord Stream” gas pipeline located in the Baltic Sea. The pipeline was damaged in September 2022 due to a mysterious explosion.

The explosion that destroyed these pipelines three years ago effectively cut off Russia’s gas supply to Europe, even though Russia had already significantly reduced its gas exports prior to this incident. This event further squeezed the energy supply on the continent.

Both Russia and Western countries have stated that the incident was an act of sabotage. Investigators have spent years trying to piece together the mystery behind the culprits, and last year a Ukrainian man was arrested in Italy on suspicion of coordinating related attack activities.

On Thursday, Lavrov stated that the United States has been committed to dominating the global energy market, citing Venezuela as an example (Washington has effectively taken control of this country’s largest oil reserves in the world), while also specifically naming Iran.

According to a transcript of an interview published by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov said, “The United States is now also claiming that it wants to take over the ‘Nord Stream’ pipeline.”

He did not provide further details on this matter.
