Uber, Pony.ai, and Verne team up to launch Europe's first commercial autonomous taxi service in Croatia
Uber, Pony.ai, and the autonomous driving startup Verne are collaborating to launch the first commercial autonomous taxi service in Europe, with operations set in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.
The three companies announced on Thursday that, under the agreement, Pony.ai will provide the autonomous driving technology, while the Croatian startup Verne will serve as the fleet owner and be responsible for daily operational management.
Uber will integrate the service into its global ride-hailing platform and will operate in parallel with Verne’s consumer-facing application.
According to the statement, the three companies “aim to establish a scalable path for commercial autonomous taxi services in Zagreb and gradually expand to more European cities and other markets, with plans to scale the fleet to thousands of autonomous taxis in the coming years.”
As part of the agreement, Uber will also invest in Verne and support its business expansion as a strategic partner.
The three companies have already launched road testing in Zagreb and are preparing for the paid service.
