Report Reveals Eighty Percent of Russians Believe in Supernatural Beings
(MENAFN) A recent survey indicates that roughly 81% of Russians believe in at least one type of supernatural entity, with most also having practiced some form of mystical or magical activity in their lifetime.
The study, which sampled 1,600 adults, found that two-thirds of respondents believe in saints or higher powers that protect people in dangerous situations or during combat. Over half of those surveyed also expressed faith in protective spirits or deities for military personnel, while 50% said they believe in household guardian spirits known as ‘Domovoy,’ and 48% believe in entities that safeguard children and animals. Belief in more fantastical beings such as mermaids or nymphs was far lower, at 22%.
Participation in mystical practices is widespread: 85% reported trying at least one form of such activity. Among these, 59% had visited sacred healing springs, 52% consulted horoscopes or astrologers, 37% tried fortune-telling, 36% engaged in worship at sacred sites, and 25% wore talismans or amulets believed to channel protective spirits or natural forces.
Belief in supernatural beings grows with age, with 93% of those over 60 affirming such beliefs, compared to 65% of adults aged 25-34. Interest in mystical practices, however, remained consistent across age groups, ranging between 80% and 88%. Analysts noted that the findings may be influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty about the future, which could heighten interest in spiritual protection and rituals.
