Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi spoke by phone with UN Secretary-General Guterres to exchange views on the latest developments in the region, the continued military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran, and the situation in Lebanon. Araghchi said that the military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran constitute a serious violation of the basic principles of the UN Charter and international law, and stressed that the United Nations and the Secretary-General personally have the responsibility to issue a clear and firm condemnation of this “aggression” and, under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, to hold the “aggressor” accountable. Araghchi also called on the international community to focus on the root causes of the deterioration of security conditions in the current region and the Strait of Hormuz—namely the military actions of the United States and Israel. He pointed out that the issue of the Strait of Hormuz cannot be viewed separately from the overall situation in the region; the current disruption of shipping through the strait is precisely the result of the war launched by the United States and Israel. He emphasized that any country or international body that cares about peace and security in the region should, in a responsible manner and without any indulgence, condemn the actions of the two sides, and should demand that they stop their military actions against Iran.
