The Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services, Jorge Moreira da Silva, said on the 23rd that the situation in the Middle East has continued to escalate, delivering a devastating blow to civilians and livelihoods and triggering global ripple effects, with today’s world “in the most violent period since World War II.” In a statement issued by the United Nations Office for Project Services, da Silva said that the war has been going on for nearly a month, and its devastating effects have already crossed the borders of countries affected by the conflict, leading to an exponential rise in oil, fuel, and natural gas prices and hitting the world economy. Da Silva said, “Our world is in the most violent period since World War II,” adding that the number of people who are displaced and forced to flee their homes is increasing every hour. He called on all parties to implement all resolutions of the UN Security Council and end this turmoil and people’s suffering through diplomatic and peaceful means. The United Nations Office for Project Services was formerly part of the United Nations Development Programme and became an independent organization affiliated with the United Nations in September 1994.
