🇨🇦 The Canadian Parliament is considering Bill C-25, which bans political donations in cryptocurrencies.
The "Strong and Free Elections Act" references concerns that the pseudo-anonymity of cryptocurrencies creates transparency issues, and that identifying participants is "fundamentally difficult."
Provisions include a fine equal to twice the amount of the illegal contribution.
C-25 is the second attempt to ban cryptocurrency donations. Its predecessor, Bill C-65, contained identical provisions, but the bill was rejected after the parliament was dissolved in January 2025.
In the past week, Canada has become the second jurisdiction to seek restrictions on political crypto donations. Previously, the UK government enacted urgent legislative changes to ban such donations.
