(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) Egypt is moving to embed environmental considerations into its local development framework as part of a broader effort to improve resource efficiency and advance sustainable development across governorates, Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad said.

In a statement, the ministry said Awad chaired an expanded meeting with senior officials to review key policy files, highlighting what she described as a“qualitative shift” in performance following the integration of environmental responsibilities into local development functions.

Awad stressed that incorporating environmental criteria into development planning is no longer optional, but essential to ensure the sustainability of national and service projects, as well as to enhance citizens’ quality of life.

The meeting reviewed progress across several priority areas, including integrated solid waste management, upgrades to sanitation and cleanliness infrastructure, procedures for reconciling building violations, and strengthening environmental inspection systems. Discussions also covered public awareness initiatives and efforts to improve resource efficiency.

The minister underscored the need for stronger coordination across ministry sectors to avoid duplication, maximise the use of available resources, and adopt innovative solutions to environmental and development challenges.

She also called for intensified field monitoring of infrastructure and service projects to ensure compliance with environmental standards, alongside expanding best practices in waste management and improving air and water quality.

Awad highlighted the importance of building the capacities of local administration staff through specialised training programmes, aimed at enhancing institutional performance and promoting more scientific approaches to environmental management.

She further emphasised the need for closer cooperation with governorates and relevant entities to ensure effective implementation and deliver tangible improvements in citizens’ daily lives.

The minister concluded by stressing the importance of continuous performance monitoring to meet ministry targets, in line with Egypt’s broader push towards a balanced development model that aligns economic growth with environmental protection.
