The Washington Post reported on the 26th, citing multiple sources, that as the United States consumes a large amount of ammunition in the conflict with Iran, the U.S. Department of Defense is considering rerouting weapons originally intended for Ukraine to the Middle East. The report stated: “Although the Department of Defense has not made a final decision on the transfer of weapons, this change highlights the increasingly difficult trade-offs the U.S. must make between different demands to sustain the war with Iran.” Sources told the media that the weapons the U.S. might reroute include air defense interceptor missiles, which Ukraine ordered through a NATO project. The U.S. military has previously allocated such weapons from Europe and East Asia to the Middle East. The report quoted two European diplomats as saying that since the U.S. initiated military action against Iran, the speed at which U.S. military ammunition is being consumed has raised concerns in European countries about the impact on their orders, which in turn affects the delivery of weapons to Ukraine. The report also quoted Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, as saying that Ukraine continues to inform its partners of its needs, including air defense needs, but also understands that there is “a considerable phase of uncertainty” in the war.
