Stanford scientists explore the potential and limitations of AI-assisted research and peer review

Stanford University computer science researcher James Zou has recently explored how large language models can help scientific peers with peer review and accelerate the research process. He took part in a large-scale randomized experiment involving about 20,000 reviews to assess the impact of AI-assisted peer review on review quality. The study found that AI performs exceptionally well at identifying objective, verifiable errors or inconsistencies (such as data not matching or incorrect formulas), but it has limitations when it comes to subjective judgments like evaluating the novelty or importance of research, and sometimes it even shows a tendency to flatter. Zou emphasized that AI should support, not replace, human decision-making; scientists must be accountable for the final research outcomes, and they should transparently disclose the extent of AI involvement. The experiment showed that AI feedback improved review quality and reviewer engagement. In the future, more conferences will be held to standardize the use of AI in science. (Source: InFoQ)
