Local time March 30, Japan’s Senate Budget Committee approved the interim budget bill for fiscal year 2026. To prevent the government’s operations from getting stuck in a bind due to the budget not being able to be continued, the Japanese Cabinet approved an interim budget bill on the 27th of this month and submitted it to the Diet for review. The total amount of this interim budget bill is approximately 85.6 trillion yen, covering spending such as transfer payments to local governments, social security-related expenses, civil servant salaries, and subsidies for high school tuition, in order to keep the government running for 11 days. Japanese Prime Minister Hayashi early announced the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the holding of an early election this January, and the schedule for both houses of the Diet to deliberate on the fiscal year 2026 budget bill to begin on April 1 was forced to be delayed by about one month.
