BEIJING, March 31— (Reporter Ding Yiting) The “Energy Storage Industry Research White Paper 2026,” released on March 31, shows that by the end of 2025, China’s newly added total installed capacity of new-type energy storage exceeded 100 gigawatts, accounting for more than two-thirds of the country’s total grid energy storage scale. Compared with the end of the “13th Five-Year Plan,” it has grown by more than 40 times. For the first time, its share in the global new-type energy storage market has surpassed half, reaching 51.9%.

In terms of technological structure, lithium-ion batteries remain dominant, with an installed-capacity share of more than 96%. But as a number of hundred-megawatt-class long-duration energy storage projects have been put into operation one after another, the technological structure is gradually becoming more diversified. A group of cutting-edge new energy storage technologies—such as solid-state batteries and hydrogen energy storage—are accelerating, providing support for future new power systems’ demand for energy storage with multiple time scales and high safety. In terms of regional distribution, since the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, new-type energy storage projects have been speeding up toward regions with abundant wind and solar resources, such as northwest China and North China. Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang have become the fastest-growing areas.

Chen Haisheng, chairman of the board of directors of the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance, said that China, the United States, and Europe are still the three regions with the largest global energy storage market scale. For four consecutive years, China’s newly added installed capacity of new-type energy storage has ranked first in the world. However, as energy storage markets in the Middle East, Latin America, and other regions rise rapidly, the global energy storage market is gradually expanding to a wider range of regions.

During the “15th Five-Year Plan” period, new-type energy storage will become a main carrier of new flexible regulation capacity in power systems. At the same time, in the process of rapid development, the new-type energy storage industry still faces some challenges, such as the need to improve market mechanisms and project management standards, and the further enhancement of maturity for certain energy storage technologies.

A relevant official from the Energy Conservation and Science & Technology Equipment Division of the National Energy Administration said that efforts should be made to accelerate the improvement of market mechanisms for new-type energy storage. Local authorities should be encouraged to research and explore ancillary service product types according to local conditions, and gradually expand the scale of new-type energy storage participating in ancillary services. The capacity pricing mechanism for new-type energy storage should be improved, a reliable capacity compensation mechanism should be established in an orderly manner, and new-type energy storage should be guided to develop in a rational way.
