A documentary film, “To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self,” which took 10 years to produce and once sparked controversy, will be re-screened at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy, starting on April 24.

According to the film lineup announced by the festival, “To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self” has been selected in the Special Screening category and is competing for the festival’s Non-Competition section.

“To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self” is a Hong Kong documentary that received a priority screening in 2022. It was produced by Zhang Wanting, an alumna commissioned by Li Shiyuru, the former principal of Ying Wa Girls’ School. During the period of rebuilding the school premises, the film explores students’ growth experiences. However, shortly after its official release in 2023, interviewed students said that the school and the production team disregarded their request not to release the film publicly, and claimed that some parts of the footage were shot using covert filming methods. Zhang Wanting later announced that the film would be temporarily withdrawn from public screenings.

After that, “To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self” was selected at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Film.
