Safety is always the foundation and prerequisite for the high-quality development of China’s new energy vehicles. This July, the mandatory national standard 《Safety Requirements for Electric Vehicle Traction Batteries》(GB38031-2025), organized and formulated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, will be officially implemented. The new standard revises the technical requirements for thermal runaway (heat diffusion) testing, further raising the safety threshold for EV batteries.

Recently, the next-generation Xiaomi SU7 equipped with a ternary lithium battery successfully passed a high-temperature fully-charged needle puncture test. The test standard exceeds the requirements of the new national standard soon to be implemented. Industry insiders say that battery safety standards are not limited to the national standard. Currently, China’s new energy vehicle companies are setting even higher benchmarks and stricter requirements, continuously strengthening the safety bottom line and promoting high-quality development of the industry. In addition to battery safety tests, the next-generation Xiaomi SU7 also completed a collision test involving a 50% front-overlap progressive deformation barrier (MPDB) at 60 km/h (relative speed 120 km/h). The standard for this collision test is also higher than the requirement in China’s new car assessment program (C-NCAP) of 100 km/h relative speed.

From passively meeting standards to actively surpassing them, more and more Chinese automakers are strengthening the industry’s safety bottom line through “self-imposed upgrades,” which also reflects the industry’s determination in moving from “scale leadership” toward “quality leadership.”
