JAN3 CEO criticizes Bitcoin quantum security proposal as too hasty: reckless upgrades may trigger computational attack risks

Odaily Planet Daily reports that JAN3 CEO Samson Mow posted on X that the response to the quantum computing (QC) threats surrounding Bitcoin should not be rushed. If people blindly and hastily switch from the existing signing mechanism to post-quantum (PQ) solutions, it could instead cause Bitcoin to be exposed to the risk of traditional computing attacks in the short term. The PQ signature size may increase by 10 to 125 times, which would significantly reduce network throughput, and could even bring back controversies over scaling—similar to the “block wars” seen years ago. In addition, Samson Mow warned that some PQ schemes may have potential backdoor risks. The quantum computing threat is still in the medium- to long-term stage (or may require 10 to 20 years). A more reasonable path now is to continue research rather than deploy it in a hurry. He also called out Coinbase, saying its wallet has quantum attack vulnerabilities due to address reuse, and recommended prioritizing fixes to the relevant infrastructure issues.
