I recently came across the global economic ranking for 2025, and it was quite shocking. The poorest countries in the world have astonishingly low per capita GDP, with South Sudan at only $251, Yemen at $417, and Burundi at $490. These numbers highlight how wide the gap between the rich and the poor is worldwide.

African countries make up the majority of this list of the poorest nations, from sub-Saharan Africa downward—Democratic Republic of the Congo, Niger, Somalia, and Nigeria are all on the list. Asia also has economically struggling regions like Myanmar, Tajikistan, and Nepal. In the Caribbean, Haiti’s per capita GDP is only $2,672.

Interestingly, even among these poorest countries, there are significant differences. India, despite its large population and economy, has a per capita GDP of only $2,878, placing it among the world's poorest countries. This shows that economic development depends not only on resources but also on many complex factors. Looking at this data, you can truly understand why international aid and development projects are so important.
