I just reviewed a recent ranking of the most expensive cities in the world to live in, and the results are quite interesting. Zurich tops the list with 112.5 points, followed by Geneva and Basel, also in Switzerland. Basically, if you want to know which city is the most expensive in the world, the answer is clear: Switzerland completely dominates the top 6.
What caught my attention is how New York appears in 7th place with 100 points (which is the baseline reference of the index). So Zurich is 12.5% more expensive than New York. Honolulu is in 9th with 94.4, San Francisco in 10th with 90.7, and several U.S. cities are still on the list. It seems that housing costs on the U.S. coast remain brutal.
In Asia, Singapore ranks 12th with 85.3, Tel Aviv-Yafo is 21st with 81.2. Norway also appears quite frequently with Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen, and Stavanger. The interesting part is how salary factors in these places help balance expenses, especially in Switzerland where monthly salaries range around 7,000-9,000 CHF.
Basically, if you’re wondering which city is the most expensive in the world, the answer is Zurich, but the reality is that several Swiss cities share that title of “prohibitively expensive.” It seems that living anywhere in Switzerland requires a pretty deep pocket.
