On April 1st local time, multiple U.S. officials stated that the United States and Iran are discussing a potential agreement, including a ceasefire in exchange for Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz. It is unclear whether the discussions are direct talks or mediated through intermediaries, and there is still significant uncertainty about whether an agreement can be reached. However, U.S. President Trump has discussed this possibility with multiple parties both inside and outside the government. On April 1st, Trump said on social media that Iran “just requested a ceasefire from the United States.” But he stated that the U.S. would only “consider” it if the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson on April 1st said that President Trump’s claim that Iran requested a ceasefire is false and baseless. (CCTV News)
